Day 6 - Taroudant

Having had another rough night of sleeping through Lily and Steph getting up and down in the night, we decided to make a decision. Instead of facing a 4 hour drive back to Marrakesh followed by a day and extra night in a place we don't fancy going back to, and given that we have almost done all that Taroudant has to offer we have changed our flights so we return on Sunday and fly direct out of Agadir (a 50 min drive from here). It was definitely the right choice to make and we both feel a bit better about it. Maybe 10 days was too long to try and do in the first place – but hey, good old hindsight.

So after sorting the admin associated with such a change, and having brekkie which was back to pancakes although a different type of pancake and I am not sure which I prefer and would probably need to have them side by side to really tell... maybe i'll know more after tomorrows brekkie...anyway... we realised we had nothing much to do today. We watched some more tv on the laptop. Finished true blood! Oooo, what a cliff hanger. But we have replaced it with season 2 of Sanctuary which is going ok so far.

About 12 ish we had our lunch, same old thing but oddly not bored of it yet.. Lily had finished her mornings play time and was ready for action. She donned her hat and glasses ready for a walk around town. Although it was pretty chilly in the guest house, the sun was hot out side and it was rather pleasant strolling around. We made our way to the Souks which were mostly closed as its Friday, but still it was interesting to see the Berbere Market. Berbere or “Barbarians”, is the name for the mountain people,a people surrounded in tradition and culture. Unfortunately, their market seems to be twinned with every cheap tacky market you would normally find in any town in England. Mostly selling cheap mobile phone accessories or awful clothing. I hope that we were in the wrong place, and that the Berbere market still eludes us.

The reason it may not have been the actually right market was because we were led there by another helpful Moroccan no doubt leading us to some special secret market only available in his families front room. After much tip toeing round the issue I felt I needed to be quite frank and explained that we just wanted to walk round on our own, and would not be spending any money, or looking at any shops no matter how many brothers he had who were willing to show us things tourists don't normally get to see. He said goodbye and left us to navigate our way back to somewhere we knew since he had led us off course for a while. We weaved our way back to the main gate and decided to pop into the Palais Salam hotel to A) see what all the fuss was about B) to get a cold coke and C) cos there was little else to do. It was much like any hotel that was once very nice, hasn't been maintained very well but still tries to carry off the reputation it once had. Its like Zsa Zsa Gabor . But you can stay in it.

33 dirhams (or as Steph keeps calling them dirmahs) later, we made our way back to the guest house via the public gardens. Nice, but not much to it. On our return,it was time for more playing with Lily and then perfectly timed she dozed off at 4.30pm so Steph and I could have our cookery lesson. We had decided we wanted to cook what we had eaten the night before which meant having it two nights in a row, but that was no problem. We set up the baby monitor and headed down to the kitchen where we were instructed to chop stuff, spoon spices in to pans and generally stand around the kitchen looking silly in our aprons. The food however came out lovely. I think we are going to purchase their recipe book so we can recreate some of the magic back home.

Gave Lily a proper bath in one of the other floors bathrooms this evening rather than washing her in the sink, which must have been nice for her. More than anything it was nice and warm. If that floor remains empty we might do it again tomorrow. Now though it is back to bed for more tv, although it has taken me so long to write this blog, we may only get one episode in.
